Every Morning is a New Birth – Atmabodh Sadhana

Imagine that one morning upon waking up, you come to know that you have only one day to live! How would you spend this last day of your life? The answer may be different for each individual however there will be similarities too. You would focus less on material desires, rather focus more on inner feeling of soul or atma.

We are all born with a finite number of breaths in our account called ‘life’. There is no depositing in this account, only withdrawal. One cannot check the remaining balance of ‘breaths’, only live it until the account is empty. On average, a human being spends 21,600 breaths per day and we never know which breath will be our last. Most of us spend these treasured breaths either worrying about the future or ruminating on the past, very few know the art of living in the present. This sadhana teaches us to treat each day as a new beginning.

Atmabodh Sadhana

Atmabodh sadhana is a morning prayer, where Atma means the true nature or soul, and bodh means realization. We are nothing but divine light or energy, our physical body and mind are the instruments through which our soul experiences the world and helps us realize the true meaning of life.

How to perform

Upon waking up, before you get out of bed, take a moment to check your physical and mental health. Sit straight in bed and pray to God who gave you life, and another day.

I would like to share a prayer that I learned from my Guru – “Today, I have got a new birth and I thank You for it. I will utilize every second of my new life and every ability I have to make my day meaningful. Thank You for always taking care of me and giving me strength and direction. Bless me that I always keep You in my thoughts. Bless me that I follow a righteous path and make the most of my day. I am an inseparable part of You, and I will try my best to maintain this divine relationship between us.”

I then make a rough plan for the day and remember not to repeat any mistake that I made yesterday.

A saint was once asked, “How come you do not make any mistakes? What is the secret of your life to stay peaceful and happy all the time?” he answered, “I always remember that a sword is hanging over my head, and that it can drop any moment. This makes me live every moment with total awareness – every action should be helpful to someone, and every thought should be directed toward the welfare of others.”

The last day of life can fill us with detachment and unselfish act. Every smile brings deep satisfaction. We recall all the love, happiness and respect we received in life, and feel thankful toward those people. Just a thought of that can assist us to embrace the reality and helps to be who we really are in our true sense.

Let us pray that we all have more than one day to live. With Atmabodh sadhana, taking one day at a time gives us the strength to deal with life’s challenges with a positive attitude. Without spending time in laziness, it motivates us to live every moment with full potential. Every day is a precious gift from God – let us make it the best one.
